WELCOME TO THE BRITISH COUNCIL SCHOOL |

Mr Chris Dove
Head of the British Coucil Madrid School |
Famous for its tradition of academic excellence and strong sense of values, the British Council School has been an important part of Madrid life for nearly 70 years. From small beginnings in the heart of Madrid, the school has expanded and now consists of a purpose built interlinked campus on a spacious suburban site with almost 1900 pupils. The teaching approach reflects the best of the English National Curriculum and up-to-date Spanish education and our pupils acquire an excellent knowledge of the two countries, both in terms of language and culture. They leave uniquely equipped to face the challenges of the modern world thanks to the broad-based knowledge they have gained. Former pupils can be found in many walks of life including business, science, the arts and government. |

3 IN 1 |

The British Council School is one School with three distinct sections, each with their own characteristics and identities, but each contributing to a coherent balanced education. In Early Years, British and Spanish specialist teachers and a classroom assistant care for each group of children. This enables us to combine personal attention and teamwork within our Early Years programme, where learning occurs through play, minimising competitiveness while maximising social skills. We believe that close cooperation with parents at every stage of Early Years learning is essential to a child's development and teaching personnel liaise regularly and closely with parents. |
Teaching is conducted in English and Spanish. We believe in educating the whole person so the school day includes physical, moral and artistic guidance, plus a wide range of extra-curricular activities and pupil services. All of this takes place with a safe and secure environment. |
|
The Primary Section is responsible for teaching all subjects in the English National Curriculum, as well as Spanish language and culture in accordance with the current legislation for foreign schools in Spain. We encourage enthusiasm, creativity and comprehension skills through a combination of practical activities and an individualised approach to learning. We start to inculcate study skills and individual responsibility for learning independently that will be essential for the future. We also promote self-criticism, respect for classmates and others, tolerance and solidarity. |

In Secondary, the programme of studies enables student to develop their academic and social skills to higher attainment levels. Pupils study for IGCSE exams at 16 and in the final two years AS level exams together with the Spanish Baccalaureate. All subjects to IGCSE are taught in English apart from Spanish and Spanish Humanities. In Bachillerato both languages are used. The Secondary Curriculum includes English and Spanish language, a third European language, mathematics, history, geography and science. Art, music, drama, ICT, and physical education are also given prominence. |
